10 tips to prepare for TOEFL

Planning to complete your TOEFL in the near future? If so, then you will find the ten tips in this article incredibly useful. Let's dive straight in!

You are going to need to get used to the format of the examination. What many people don't realize is that there are two types of examination out there. You have the paper-based test, and you have the recently introduced Internet based test. Your country will offer one or the other, never both of them. You will therefore want to know beforehand what examination is going to be carried out in your country. Get yourself used to the format as they are both different. This is going to help prevent stress when it comes to doing the examination!

If you are aiming to go to a post-secondary school in the United States, then as a non-native speaker, completing the TOEFL is vital. However, what many people don't know is that every school, and every program within that school is going to need something different from you in terms of score. Therefore, talk to your school and find out what score you need to be aiming for on the examination!

The English that you use in a casual environment isn't going to get you through the TOEFL sadly. Instead, you are going to need to learn academic language. Therefore, the best way to prepare for the examination is to read academic writing. If you come across a word you don't know, look up the definition! Reading academic writing will also give you an indication of the style of prose you need to follow.

There are plenty of practice tests out there, and they should be fairly easy to source so try to get hold of a couple. As it is likely that you are going to be pressed for time when studying you should always ensure that you practice the sections which are most likely going to give you the most problems first. Once you have mastered these, only then will you want to move onto other sections.

It is also suggested that you find a mentor to help you through the test. I suggest trying to find a native English teacher who holds a lot of knowledge about the TOEFL examination. They will be able to answer any questions that you may have. Of course, some teachers are going to be expensive, if you can't afford it then you should look for people who have done the test before and feed on their knowledge!

Many people fail to realize how much energy the TOEFL is going to take out of them. It is going to take at the minimum 2.5 hours of continuous writing, much longer if you do the internet based test. Therefore beforehand you are going to need to build up your stamina, and that is hopefully going to get you in the right frame of mind to succeed.

Be prepared for the test day! There is no better way to cause you unnecessary stress than not knowing what you need to do when test day rolls around. Always ensure that you have all the equipment that you need for the examination, and perhaps more importantly, know exactly how to get to the test centre! This way you can make sure you are not late for the examination. In addition to this, don't forget to bring your photo ID as you will be unable to take the test without it.

Arrive early for the examination, around thirty minutes before. During the test know how much time you are spending on each question. Do not spend too much time on a question otherwise you will fail. If a question is difficult then you should move on, you can always come back to it later if you have more time at the end. Wearing a watch is ideal for these days.

If you are doing the internet based examination then make sure that your typing skills are perfect. This means being able to type at speed and without any errors. There is plenty of help online if you are a little bit slow!

Learn how to take notes! You are allowed to take notes in the examination, so make sure your note taking skills are perfect. Remember, you will also need to know how to take notes at university, so it is good practice for you know!
