Attention deficit disorder

There are over 2.5 million people in the world that have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder, or ADD for short, most suffers in the world are boys. Many people control the symptoms of their child by ‘medicating’ them and this of course is going to hamper their educational development. However, many people have suggested that instead of medication we can look towards alternative educational techniques which can help ADD sufferers flourish.

The problem is, there is absolutely no real way of diagnosing ADD, it is simply done by following a ‘checklist’ of symptoms, and this of course is going to cause problems as many people will display at least some of these symptoms. Calling this is a ‘disorder’ is also going to be detrimental to those that are diagnosed with the condition.

Whilst teaching ADD students can be a bit of a challenge, there are a few things which you can do to change their learning environment to help them learn slightly better, let’s take a little look at a few of these methods.

The majority of people that suffer from ADD have weak visual and auditory memory skills, and thus it is the job of a parent or teacher to boost these. This will help improve their memory, and of course this is going to be something that they are going to benefit from for a long time.

Using bright colors in your demonstrations of concepts is also fantastic. It really does help grab the interest of an ADD sufferer. They can even carry out work using a colored pencil. As you are holding their attention this is going to contribute substantially to their education.

Many people find that soothing instrumental music is great for calming ADD sufferers down and letting them focus. It is advisable that suffers stay away from loud music that could have offensive words in them. Many people have found that this could trigger a few symptoms.

You should keep ADD sufferers away from fluorescent lighting. This lets out a hum, and because ADD sufferers are able to pick up more ‘sound detail’ it can be incredibly distracting. Likewise, a computer hum can also be distracting for them. Moving them away from these objects will do absolute wonders for their learning.

At school the ADD sufferer should be placed in a room with a low student to teacher ratio, too many people in the room will cause a distraction for them, and it also means that the student is going to be able to get the attention that they need.

Limit how much TV, video games and computers they use. These images are harmful to an ADD sufferer and can trigger a few symptoms. Instead put them in a calm situation, most people actually like this and it will really help ‘release’ that creative person in them.

Finally, keep a positive attitude about the whole situation. It isn’t their fault that they are behaving in that way. Sure, it can be a bit of a test sometimes, but they are still a person and they have needs that need to be attended to.
