English tutoring methods

There are many different English tutoring Methods out there. However, what you need to bear in mind is that they are all remarkably different. Now, I am not saying that some are ineffective, far from it in fact. What I am saying is what may work for one person may not necessarily work for another. This of course means that finding the right method to teach English may take a while. In this article I want to look at the most popular methods.

Perhaps the most popular out of all of them is referred to as a 'direct method'. This is utilised by a lot of teachers nowadays. The basic idea behind this is that the language will be taught in the same way that the first language was learned. This means a lot of talking and interacting, but not looking at printed text (after all, we can speak before we read right?). This can be split into a number of different sub-methods, but basically it is all about imitation. It is highly effective for the right people, but it does need a highly experience tutor.

The next method is known as the 'audio-lingual' method. The idea behind this is that tapes will be listened to or viewed which have the language in them. The practice will then take place in the form of drills. This is an incredibly effective form of language learning and people will be able to pick up the language rather quickly. This is fairly similar to the immersion focus, although of course it takes place in a classroom.

Next is the immersion method. This is rather expensive to get working as it often involves lengthy trips to the target country. The idea behind this is that a person is thrown directly into the environment where the language is used, even if they don't know any concepts. There is one problem here though. Since everybody talks differently that they would interact with, it may not be a highly accurate method learning.

The minimalist method is also pretty popular at the moment. This involves the use of flash cards and the discussion of words in a proper context. As you can tell from the name, this is pretty 'bare bones' practice, but many tutors have noticed that it is highly effective if used properly.

The final method that I wish to note here is known as 'directed practice'. This is incredibly quick, but a rather ineffective way of learning the language. It basically looks at repeating phrases over and over again. It can be effective if you need to pick up some key phrases, but it is all pretty 'text book' which means that the language will not be learned as well as it should with some other methods.

This is just a brief outline of the various teaching methods out there. As I mentioned at the start, it may be a little difficult finding the right method for you, but once you do, you will find that you pick up the language rather quickly.
