How to encourage students to do homework
Be honest, when you were a child, how often did you refuse to do your homework? I am sure you absolutely loathed it, but eventually your parents managed to convince you to do the work, so you did! Children nowadays are exactly the same as you were back then, but now they have many more distractions in place! Children absolutely hate homework,. Many of them want to stop learning as soon as they leave that classroom and they don't want their free time taken up by something that they see as pointless. Your job, as a teacher (or parent) is to convince children that homework is worthwhile, and that completing it is going to have a benefit on their lives in the future. That is exactly what I want to discuss with you here, how to encourage students to do their homework.
One of the first things that you are going to need to help the student with is to realize what the point of homework actually is. Many students believe that homework has absolutely no 'real world' benefit, and thus are very reluctant to complete it. Teach them that homework is practice for the future when they are actually going to need to complete things on time for the sake of the livelihood. It is important that you 'drill' this into the student's head because studies have shown taking responsibility early on in life is going to 'wire' the brain in such a way that they will be able to take responsibility later on in life too. In short, the child needs to be taught that it is beneficial.
Are your students not completing their homework? It may not be because they don't want to, it may be because they are getting stuck with it. As a teacher, it is your job to make yourself accessible to your students. That way they know that they can come to you when they need help with their homework, some may already do so, but you may need to give the others a 'nudge'. If you find that the student isn't completing homework then ask them if they have any problems, they should give you good guidance towards working out how to encourage them to complete more of it.
Many students don't complete work on time as they are completely unaware of the effect that it has on their grade. They seem to think that they can get away with not completing homework every so often. Let them know that this isn't the case, let them know if their grades are slipping as homework isn't complete, let them know if those grades are climbing. After all, there is no better motivation for success in a classroom then those all-important grades that your students are going to receive!
As a teacher, you should know just how important it is for students to complete their homework, so make sure you encourage them, and do let them know if they are slipping. Far too many teachers let children get away with not doing homework, and this is only going to be detrimental for the future.
