What is speech difficulty

Speech Difficulty is a much more common problem than you may think, especially in children. In this article I want to take a little look at what speech difficulty is all about, and perhaps more importantly, what you can do should you believe that somebody is suffering from the problem. Let's take a look.

Firstly, what is speech difficulty? Well, to put it in the simplest way possible, it is difficulty in the way in which we speak. This could be a physical difficulty in making the sounds needed for speech properly. Some people may be able to make the right sounds, but they don't use them in the correct places when speaking. The first is what is known as 'articulation difficulty' the second is called 'phonological difficulty'. Some people suffer from one or the other, other people suffer from both of the conditions, although this is fairly rare.

Now, before you get a little worried about the development of your child's speech, there are a couple of things that you want to know.

Firstly, there is speech delay. This isn't something that you really need to worry about, not until much further into the child's life at least. As you are probably aware, children develop at different rates, and that means just because somebody at that age can do something, doesn't mean that another can. If they are developing slower than the average then this is known as speech delay. If the delay is longer than two years then this is a problem known as speech disorder. This is where something needs to be dealt with.

So what can cause speech difficulty? Well, a number of things in fact. Most of them are down to education. Let's take a little look:

·         Problems with hearing. In fact, if a child suffers from a lot of ear infections when younger then it is expected that they will be far behind in terms of speech development.

·         Nerve conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, although you should know about this early on in a child's life.

·         Injuries to the head or the neck can cause developmental problems.

·         General learning difficulties.

·         A lack of stimulation in the life of somebody. After all, the majority of us will take our speech from the surrounding environment.

·         Structure of the face can have an effect on speech, so if it is slightly 'out' then it can cause problems.

Thankfully, in most cases, you are going to be able to sort out speech development problems on your own. This is going to involve a lot of talking to your child, and showing interest in what they say. This will allow them to practice and correct the things that they are saying. Reading stories regularly to them will also have an effect.

One thing you are going to want to realize is that if you are concerned then you should take the child to a doctor, the sooner you do this, the quicker the problem will sort itself out. However, only do this if they start to lag over two years behind other children their age.
